Flag of Ontario 

The flag of Ontario is called the Red Ensign.  It includes the Union Jack in the upper left corner, representing Ontario's ties to Great Britain and the Coat-of Arms of the Province on the red background.

The Coat-of-Arms consists of a green shield with three golden maple leaves surmounted by the Banner of St. George.  The banner indicates Ontario's close ties with Britian while the colours, green and gold, are Ontario's official colours.  Green symbolizes the land.

Prior to 1965 the Red Ensign with a different Coat-of-Arms had been the Canadian flag.  On February 15, 1965 the present Canadian flag  became official.  Many people objected to losing the Red Ensign as the Canadian Flag and on May 21, 1965 the present Red Ensign became the official Ontario Flag.

Ontario’s official motto is: "Ut Incepit Fidelis Sic Permanent" - "Loyal She Began, Loyal She Remains".

The white trillium is the official flower of Ontario.  It is illegal to pick this flower or transplant it in provincial parks and land owned by conservation authorities. 

 Official Bird  

The Common Loon is the official bird of Ontario.  Its haunting calls can be heard in the spring and summer over cottage country.  It was adopted as the official bird on June 23, 1994. 

In 1987 when the Canadian one dollar bill was eliminated and replaced with a one dollar coin, the loon was used on the new coin.  It immediately became known as the "Loonie".   

When the two dollar bill was replaced by a coin in 1996, of course, it was called the "Toonie"  even though it had a Polar Bear on the back, rather than a Loon.
